Get Started With Us
If you are interested in Ballroom Dance, here are a few helpful tips to get you started.
Hop Right In
- No previous experience is required to join, and visitors can participate by paying a nominal fee.
- Annual membership is optional though required to join the performance team.
Turn Up Tuesday
- Classes are held every Tuesday evening during the Dance Year, typically from mid-September to May.
- Schedule:
- 7:00 – 8:00 PM: Beginning Class
- 8:15 – 9:00 PM: Intermediate Class
- There is a 15-minute break between classes.
Come As You Are
- No strict dress code, just comfortable, non-constricting clothing.
- Shoes: Wear shoes that will easily slide on the floor
- Partner: You don’t need to bring a partner; the classes are group-based, and you’ll rotate partners often.
Performing… Yes, You!
- After learning several dances, you may have the opportunity to join the Banneker Ballroom Dance Club Performance Team.
- This team performs at events like the June and December Galas, the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, and by invitation to other events around the DMV.
Opportunities to Practice
- At the end of selected months, we host a special Dance & Learn “Theme Social” — a lively event where students can come together to practice their moves, enjoy some individual instruction, and just have a great time dancing!
- Many students love getting into the spirit by dressing up when there is a unique theme. Whether you’re here to improve your dancing or just want to enjoy the music and good vibes, these socials are always a hit!
