American Ballroom
Latin Ballroom
Waltz
The granddaddy of all ballroom dances, Waltz is a smooth, romantic ballroom dance with sweeping movements characterized by its rise and fall action and danced to music in 3/4 time.
Foxtrot
The long walking movements of the Foxtrot are a combination of slow and quick steps. The slow steps take up two beats of the music, and the quick steps take up one beat.
Tango
A fiery dance, the Tango is characterized by sharp, staccato cat-like progressive movements across the floor, a variety of holds (e.g., closed, side-by-side, promenade), a low center of gravity and a dramatic, theatrical mood.
Quickstep
A fast, light, and elegant international standard dance set to fast-paced music and characterized by fast, lively steps at a running pace.
Bachata
A sensual, romantic dance from the Dominican Republic characterized by hip movements, side-to-side footwork, and close partner interaction. On counts 4 and 8, there’s an exaggerated hip check.
Samba
A lively, rhythmic Brazilian dance with a distinctive bounce and hip movements. It’s performed to upbeat, syncopated music.
Salsa
The most popular of all the Latin dances, Salsa is a fun and energetic dance and easy to learn. It has many fast turns, exciting footwork, rhythmic hip movements danced to lively music.
Cha Cha
A fun, flirty dance that grew out of the Cuban Mambo, popular in the ’50’s in the U.S.
Rumba
The “dance of love”, the Rumba is a romantic, sensual Latin ballroom dance emphasizing hip movement and footwork, close partner connection, swaying hips, and a still upper body.
Argentine Tango
With origins in Argentina, an improvisational, intimate, and passionate style of dancing emphasizing a close embrace and expressive movements.
